2019 – July

July!

Things are getting off to a shaky start. Quite literally to be honest.

On July 4th we felt some shaking throughout the house – nothing too crazy. Turns out that over in Ridgecrest they had a 6.4 earthquake. Enough excitement for me. We went and saw some fireworks later that night.

The very next day we felt shaking. This time it was almost a rolling wave of shaking and it didn’t stop for a bit. It started to get us nervous as we didn’t know how close to the epicenter we were or if it would get worse. Reports initially were saying a 6.9 earthquake and later confirmed to be a 7.1. We were far enough that no major damage occurred to the house or anything, but what a freaky feeling to have the ground beneath you shake.

We heard back from the job that I applied for in San Francisco. They offered us the position but mentioned that they really wanted to have me take a role in San Francisco and not in Portland. I entertained that for a little and compared the costs of living as well as the wage that I would be making. Ultimately it would still be overwhelmingly better for the family to be in Portland. I let them know and they were disappointed but said they would offer the role in Portland if that is what I preferred. Looks like we would be ending up back in the place we didn’t think we would be!

In between looking for places to live and getting things ready (we didn’t have to pack as everything was still packed from our recent move), we traveled some. Decided to check out Paramount Ranch which was pretty much all but destroyed by the 2018 Woolsey fire. We took a trip also to the beach and did some under the dock photos (which are best when it’s foggy or the sun is setting).

We also were fortunate to have my mom make an Apple Pie and some Cinnamon rolls for the family. We also took a bunch of photos of the kids at beaches because they are kinda cute when they aren’t being little destruction.

Next up I am showing a part of the 2012 movie “Flight” which I will talk about more below. Feel free to watch the video, it’s pretty intense.

Nearing the end of the month we took a trip over to the Alaska Airlines flight 261 memorial. Ever since we visited this memorial some years back we have returned at least once a year. You can read about it in the link above. The (above) airplane crash scene of “Flight” was loosely based on flight 261. One of the differences is that the pilot was not sleeping and was not inhibited by drugs or alcohol. Also, another difference was that nobody survived, however the section with the plane flying inverted is true as the black box confirmed every step that happened before it crashed into the ocean. What a terrifying way to leave this earth.

On a lighter note, we ended the month by going down to Huntington Beach and were able to see some pretty epic sunsets. Here is a cute photo of Elijah and me when we caught a wave! Cheesecake? What a great way to celebrate this new chapter we were about to embark on.
