Hey
Tonight I had a blast from the past. Less than an hour ago..
I was at In-N-Out eating dinner with my family when Santa and his helpers came in to get some food. Santa was missing his top and just wearing a red scarf but still had on those santa pants, all the while surrounded by female helpers dressed as Christmas as you can imagine. We took note at how they were all dressed up and continued eating dinner.
Santa comes over to get some Ketchup and turns around “Jason?”
I look up to see that I know this guy. He was one of my favorite teachers in high school. Mr. Jones, who taught History to me and my brother both. “I had to be able to sleep at night, I had to know if it was you”
He continued to talk and I smiled and gave a nod when he looked at me, but I didn’t really catch much of what he said because, I was astonished. He turned and asked me where I work and what I do, but I honestly forgot in that moment of time. I had to ask my parents where I worked. He told me about how he had to retire from teaching in 2004 after a back surgery. He looked great, just as I remembered him.
Then he left us to eat dinner.
On my way out, I got a refill and walked over to him to tell him goodbye. I walked over and shook his hand- to which he had a firm grip. “It was great seeing you”
“It was even better seeing you, I was meant to be here and to see you there” He then starts to tell me how he almost didn’t come, but he did- and then out of all of the kids that he taught he recognized me. (I graduated with a class size of about 1000 and he was one of the most liked teachers on campus.)
Now rewind to Sunday. My pastor was talking about being the type of person that people look from afar and say “oh look at that guy, he’s nobody – just another person” (the point wasn’t to be fake for others, but to be true to yourself) and then to show people there is more than meets the eye. I looked past this man who once taught my class. He is the type of guy my pastor was referring to. He may not seem like much dressed up as a Santa, with no beard and glue still sticking to his eye brows from the costume, but he really is a great man.
So I think Mr. Jones was right, again. It was meant for us to meet up.
What a blast from the past.
Merry Christmas.
just Pray.
