Pen Pals

IMG_5546 It’s been over a month since I started my pen pal adventures… I started with one friend and now I have well over 20. Some of us are just postcard buddies. Others write long lengthy letters about everything we can think of. It’s nice having an active mind. Writing is awesome. It’s like a long lost friend that I recently ran into again. It’s natural. It’s that old familiar feeling that wakes my soul… even if it is just letters for now.  I HIGHLY RECOMMEND getting a Pen Pal if you don’t already have one! A few tips before you get started… I know what you’re thinking “it’s just a pen and paper right”… yes and no. When I first started I just purchased some note cards from the dollar store and a few stamps. A couple of dollars and BAM… I had five new friends across the country. However, as time went on I added a new Pal from Canada. I had no idea about international shipping. It’s a little more pricy but it’s still pretty amazing. If you’re just starting out I’d start with just one or two new pals. The desire to add more is understandable because we thrive on instant gratification and it takes a while to get mail. You keep writing more people until you end up like me and have 20 or more pals! Shipping a letter isn’t so bad. But shipping 20 can be pricy after a while. A US stamp from USPS is 47 cents. You can purchase them at the post office and pick from the stamps they have in stock or you can order them online from USPS.com. They also sell international stamps online and they run $1.50 per letter. The kicker about ordering them online… you have to pay an extra $1.20 to get them shipped. Prices are always changing so be cautions and aware. You will also notice that other than letters there are card exchanges, Post card swaps, pocket letters, flip books, stationary swaps and goodie boxes. I swore I was just going to write letters. . . but now that I’m getting into it I really enjoy the creative aspects. YIKES. To keep the cost down I have been doing a lot of research. I want to share some of  my favorite links with you. These have helped me keep my costs down and still remain creative. Post Cards:  I usually buy from Walgreens or CVS but if you wand to create your own and have a smart phone I recommend Postagram.  It’s about 99 cents to send one in the US and that’s including postage. There are other apps but it’s my favorite. Stationary: I get a lot of my stationary from dollar stores or I make it myself! See my Pinterest for more ideas! Or if you want some really fun pre-made stationary you can check out some of these stores… they will rock your socks off! If you are looking for WASHI TAPE and STICKERS: I recommend either your local dollar store Oriental Trading. You can order online and get a bundle of it for a low cost. good 65_7696320313891934099_n If you are doing pocket letters… Amazon.com and e-bay have the best rates for the baseball card sleeves. Etsy.com has some pre-made ones if you don’t prefer to make them yourself (what’s the fun in that). However, here are a couple fun shops if you do want to purchase them: Pandamonium and A Little Lemon Stand.  If you want to get a little more creative and add some fun things you can also try these shops: Oh and then there are pens…These can get pricy too. You can start out with anything really. But here are some favorites you can check out if you ever decided to get addicted to pens… I’m partial to the Jet Stream. There are millions out there but here are a few that are tried and true. You don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars but you certainly can. You can find fun stationary at thrift stores or e-bay if you search enough. You can also make your own envelopes out of magazines, old books, scrapbook paper, or even paper bags. I search the thriftiest ways to be an awesome pen pal. The awesome part… I can use the same supplies for my pen pals as I use for my Bullet Journal. 13002554_994451927290101_7193233563902889802_o

What are some of your favorite Pen Pal supplies???

Sometimes it’s just life…

Nothing too exciting has been going on. We’ve been busy 🙂 but it’s the normal every day stuff that keeps us occupied.

It’s the little things like Storm chasing, catching a short glimpse of the desert flowers, and splashing in puddles.

Arizona is really beautiful. We’ve been stopping and taking a moment to appreciate the beauty.

It’s everywhere! I used to think that nothing would match the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. However, the more time I spend in the southwest… The more beautiful it becomes.

“To live by grace means to acknowledge my whole life story, the light side and the dark. In admitting my shadow side I learn who I am and what God’s grace means. As Thomas Merton put it, “A saint is not someone who is good but who experiences the goodness of God” -Brennan Manning

I can really see God’s workmanship here. He’s really opened my eyes to something that I was blind to before. This place is majestic.

Drives through the country are breathtaking and lush and awe-inspiring.

Learning to be content where you are is a beautiful gift. A couple years ago I would whine and complain about the summers. I would drag my feet and wouldn’t admit that there was anything good about the southwest. To be honest I had hardened my heart to the point I could only see useless dirt and a big ugly city. I chose to see those things because I so strongly missed “home”.

Needless to say that things have changed… Drastically. I really fell in love with this land. I rarely miss the Pacific Northwest. This feels like home now. I’ve learned to live without longing to be elsewhere. I’ve learned to not be in competition with anyone but myself. I’ve learned to let go of what is in the rear view mirror and to look forward.

” When I get honest, I admit I am a bundle of paradoxes”. – Brennan Manning

There is no more pretending to be fulfilled. No more putting on a mask and acting like I have to prove myself or be what other people think I should be. I don’t have to pretend like everything is okay when it’s not… Because things really are okay. Imperfection doesn’t mean incomplete. It means being alive and experiencing all that life has to offer. Imperfection is beautiful.

I have no desire to be perfect. It’s not attainable. I’m not perfect. I’ve made big mistakes. My only desire is to be a better person than I was the previous week.

I do not consider myself a “saint” by any means. I’m just a human trying to live life to the best of my ability. It helps to have a place of worship that challenges me, a place that forces me to think about what it means to be truly alive.

A place where I can meet people who have such different stories than my own… Who I can still learn from. People who have open wounds and open hearts. People who inspire others to be better by exposing their own imperfections.

A place that teaches me to look at my life and realize that it’s okay to make mistakes but shows me how I can get back up and make better choices.

A place doesn’t makene feel guilty when I fail but inspires me to keep going. To keep searching. To keep examining.

A place that softens my heart so that I can see the beauty that is around me.

Arabella has really enjoyed having a friend around. I think babysitting has really helped with her socialization. The two spend a lot of time together! We’ve also been spending as much time outside as possible before summer comes! This means lots of exploring!

some days youve gotta let the girl dress herself!

I’ve been trying to write more letters 🙂 And thanks to my pen pals its been pretty fun!

It’s nice going to the mail and getting something other than junk mail and bills!

It was completely worth it!

“What it is…is a place where I can return to myself. It’s enough of a scramble to get to…that the energy expended is significant, and it translates into a change in my body chemistry and my psychological chemistry and my heart chemistry…”
